That is because I have only begun to develop this.  I haven't begun to
figure out how best to handle any error conditions that might arise from
this.

The same thing that happened with the code I showed you.  This suggests that
maybe your suggestiong that: "the global TApplication object has already
created its own internal window before main() is even entered.  That might
effect how things behave, since the TApplication window would be associated
with the default desktop while the actual MainForm would be associated with
your custom desktop instead." might need to be explored.

If I need to develop two programs, one of which being the program I've been
working with and the other being responsible for managing the desktop, I'll
need to figure out a neat, efficient way to have the two talk to each other:
perhaps via a named pipe or perhaps by have each send the other a message as
required.
