There are several API's from which to choose.

The Win32 API.
    FindFirstFile, FindNextFile and FindClose


The Posix API
    opendir, readdir, rewinddir and closedir
    function prototypes are in dirent.h


Borland's C/C++ compiler's API
    findfirst, findnext and findclose
    function prototypes are in dir.h

The VCL API
    FindFirst, FindNext and FindClose
    function prototypes are in sysutils.hpp
