thanks Remy,
that answers many of my questions. However, when I have
a simple GUI, say a form with one button, how would I get
this to work with UpdateLayeredWindow()?

If I'm correct I would have to let the form (including the
button) paint to my buffer bitmap and then call UpdateLayeredWindow.

Now if the button gets pressed I would have to update again, correct?
But where do I notice that the button was pressed? Ok, I could use
WM_LBUTTONDOWN message in this case but this would mean I had to
update whenever the button changes its appearance and the like for
all other controls I use...
So, is UpdateLayeredWindow usable for standard GUI apps at all?
