COMport issue!!

I have an application in which, it will query 8 comports. Every time I open
a comport, I send it a S, I have a notepad connected to my COM1 then I can
see the S that I am writing. Now, if I don't reply to it, it will continue
searching through the rest of the comports.
By the way, everytime I don't see a reply, I close that port, whichever I
happened to open.

My problem is that everytime that I open COM3 and send it an S in my read, I
see this S coming back??? I do not expect this to happen, what is more
alarming is that the que is telling me that there is a byte waiting in my in
que. I know that only something being sent by another device can be
replying to my S, but what device can be replying back with what I send it?
Does the modem behave in this way?

Thank you,
Neil P.
