Actually yes, this is quite possible. It is probably setup with ECHO ON.
Try opening 
hyperterminal, and select DIRECT TO TO COM3: and type stuff and see if
you get a reply 
e.g.

AT&6 should give the modem configuration etc.....and ATE0 should turn
off echo.

BTW: This is all implied when the Modem is off line, when it is online
that is a different
matter alltogether.
