Hi Dave,
Another good suggestion I'll try out.  The COM1 port talks to 
an NIQ EZIO a/d d/a converter.  It's outputs drive small reed
relays which switch 6 volts from a lantern battery to two 
small stepper motors.  This is all for a class in "physical 
computing" for students of Design and Media Arts.  I don't
think we'll do any damage - but you never know...  Some of
