I think my problem is not with the file system The resolution of the last access time would not matter if it would work at all. I read about the restrictions regarding Windows file times under different systems but a resolution of one day would be good enough. I also found a post from you that was related to this problem but the guys that replied only pointed out that Windows Explorer would reset the date. From what I tested so far the call to CloseHandle() is telling the system to update the file information. When I uncomment the call to CloseHandle() the file seems to keep the right date but is inaccessable until I close my app, as expected. I still consider this somewhat weird that SetFileTime() requires me to open and close the file what actually is considered as an "access", thereby resetting the last access time. thanks for your help, Nick
