Does the sequence of commands you want to use work if called from a
single thread? I would start with a sequence of commands that work in
a single thread.

Is there a reason all the MCI commands can't take place on the other
thread? I would probably avoid calling some MCI functions from the
main thread and others (to the same device) from another.

One alternative is to use lower level wave input APIs like waveIn* or
DirectSound, but before you go that far make sure you can't manage
with MCI by calling all functions from the same thread (doesn't need
to be the main thread).
