What you describe would happen if the main VCL thread did something that is waiting for the thread but the thread is not doing what it is supposed to be doing, thus blocking the main VCL thread from continuing so it can't process new messages anymore. What does your actual button code look like that is resetting the values and stopping the thread? Are you calling TThread::WaitFor() at all? What does your thread code look like?
