Really, using this way you only test that this record (ProgId)
exists in the Registry. Yes, you can read it but you can 
write it the same way also.
You can try to use follow way:

Variant Excel;
try{
Excel=Variant::CreateObject("Excel.Application");
}
catch(...)
{
ShowMessage("No, it is not Excel");
return;
}
ShowMessage("Seems Excel");
