How can I determine the type of folder a certain PIDL 'points to'?

For folders listed under the 'My computer' folder, I can convert the PIDL to
a path name and pass the path name to GetDriveType() to determine if the
folder is a fixed drive, CD-ROM drive, etc.

I would like to do something similar for the folders listed under 'Network
neighborhood', that is determine whether the folder is a workgroup, network
node, network share, etc.

By examining the first byte of a PIDL, I can determine the type of network
folder (for example, 0x47 for the 'Entire network' folder, 0x41 for a
workgroup, 0x42 for a network node, etc.), but I'm not sure if this is the
right way to go and whether this works on all machines.

Is there a fail-safe way to determine the type of network folder?
