Windows wierdness (SendMessage, Win98, Win2000)

I developed an app using BCB, WindowsME, and Windows2000. The app works
well. A user tried running on Windows98. App crashed. Tracing it I
found that on the following function:

void WinComboBox::add(char * str) {
     SendMessage(hwndC, CB_ADDSTRING, 0, (LPARAM) str);
}

SendMessage works with a return value of 0, indicating that the string
was added to the 0th element. When returning from this function an
EExternalException is raised. Message: "Project x raised exception
class EExternalException with message 'External exception C000001D'..."

In the CPU pane the return commands are:

pop ebp
ret
nop
nop

In 2000 ESP contains the correct return location, whereas in 98 it
appears to be garbage. In 98 I have seen 00000143 and 00000000 as
values in ESP.

I have traced another crash in 98 which boiled down to the same problem
of function blowing up after performing SendMessage.

Has anyone seen anything like this and have any pointers?

Thanks,
David
