Since you only need time interval of 5s TTimer should be good enough. I 
think there's an example in the online help. You can also drag a TTimer 
component into your form. Double click on the event field. BCB will create 
the header for your timer procedure. Of course, you can use 'new' on TTimer 
like any other class. But the 1st method just helps you to get the idea how 
to define your timer function :-)

BTW, since you said the timer procedure is very resource intensive I assume 
the main is not doing something continuity requied, e.g. playing movie or 
music, otherwise you will see the delay every 5s.
