What you describe will work for managing the number of calls to
talk_to_hardware but will not allow for an abort from an already executing
call to talk_to_hardware.  Since talk_to_hardware blocks the current thread
(according to my understanding of the problem) then the application thread
will not process the next button click until after talk_to_hardware has
completed ... meaning the abort button click doesn't get processed in time
to stop the current execution.
