They just need to install IE4+, that's all. It updates > SHELL32.DLL as part of its installation. I am sorry but- this is not true. Despite the fact that the MSDN does indeed say that NT4 with IE4 or higher will have the 4.71 version of shell32.dll installed, this is simply not true. How do I know? - because I have a ghost install of a bare bones clean NT4 OS which I have tried to update the shell32.dll in through the several different ways that the MS DLL Help Database suggests it can be done (inlcuding the method you suggest). DLL Help DB Link (may wrap): http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/servicedesks/fileversion/dllinfo.asp&SD=MSDN The dll help database shows shell32.dll 4.71.1712.3 (the version SHGetSpecialFolderPath() was introduced) coming on the scene at 9/18/1997 in IE4. The database (and the MSDN for SHGetSpecialFolderPath() ) shows that I can update this file in NT4 to the version I need using IE4 _or higher_ or the SP5 for NT4 (for example) as well as other ways. From my clean install of NT4 I have tried: SP4, 5, 6, 6a IE5, and 6 (I cant find 4 only) Even doing a full install of Visual Studio Enterprise! And - NONE of these updates my shell32.dll past the OS packaged version 4.0! So - despite what the docs say - shell32.dll is NOT updated to 4.71 by these updates. Any comments? See anything I may have missed? My only recourse now is to rewrite some code, retest and change my requirements. Zack.
