There are a number of factors that affect disk I/O speed. Some
are hardware specific such as disk speed, interleave factor
and available memory and others include the file size and what
you're doing with the data between reads/writes. Even the OS
version may have an impact on it.

For the most part, the fastest disk I/O method is that which
accesses the disk the fewest number of times. To optimize
further, IMHO will produce little or no noticeable improvement.
