That is what MSDN is for.  It always contains the latest up-to-date

ListView controls only natively support displaying icons for actual items in
the first column.  Everything else must be owner-drawn, yes.

ListView controls have several notification messages related to
owner-drawning, specifically NM_CUSTOMDRAW (which is wrapped inside
WM_NOTIFY).
