Are you sure?
Using just COM10 and higher with no "\" or ":", CreateFile returned an
invalid handle here.
My code was:

 hMyHandle = CreateFile("COM10",
                                        GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE,
                                        FILE_SHARE_READ | FILE_SHARE_WRITE,
                                        NULL,
                                        OPEN_EXISTING,
                                        FILE_FLAG_OVERLAPPED,
                                        NULL);
