I think you may be onto something with that last comment.  My NVidia
GeForce 4 card has two modes,  one is to emulate two graphics adapters and
the other is to automatically expand the display size to the combined size.
When I work with multiple monitors,  I use the multiple adapter emulation
mode so that my maximized screens only use the primary monitor...
