Perhaps you are thinking in Windows the main thread uses a default heap that is also used by Windows. So, one possible optimization is to allocate a heap to a thread so that only that thread is accessing it. I seem to remember the 1 MB myself but I don't know if it's a Windows default or has to do with the linker used to link the app. -- "Only choice is an oxymoron."
