Good follow-on and I agree with your conclusions.

I forgot to add something to my reply which is:
"The author of software is fully entitled to take whatever steps they 
can think of to make reverse engineering difficult."

I see it as a two way exchange:

The original author:By making the work public they have to accept 
that they are giving others the opportunity to learn from their 
efforts.

The competitor:By deciding not to develop something from scratch they 
have to accept the hassle, costs and risks of attempting to reverse 
engineer someone else's code.
