Ah, I see. I must admit, I've not tried Vista yet. Well, it's partly
installed on a machine at home, but it needs up-to-date drivers, and
until then it can't see the RAID volume, and ... you know the drill.

Hmm. I think this particular technique is going to be fault prone,
simply because of the unpredictability of relative character widths,
etc. etc. I can see how you were tempted into trying to fudge it, but I
can only assume you've ended up going down a dead end path.
