I do not use another wait function function before or after calling 
GetOverlappedResult().

The call fails only when I try to access a virtual COM port, that is 
created either by a USB-to-Serial adapter, or a Bluetooth dongle, and 
that is not connected to any device. Especially Bluetooth seems to need 
lots of time detecting that no connection is established!!!
