Hans, thanks for your reply.

I'm working on software for an exhaust gas analyser for the Hungarian
market. The gas analyser has to send its test results to an HTTP server in
the form of an XML file. For this purpose, the Hungarian authority supplies
a DLL with all the neccessary routines to setup the communication, generate
the XML file and transmit it to the HTTP server. The gas analyser also needs
to check periodically if a new version of the DLL is available on an FTP
server, and download it.

The routine to setup the communication can optionally be supplied with the
name, port number, user name and password of a proxy server. Therefore, I
want to check if the internet connection of the garage uses a proxy server,
and if so, retrieve the proxy settings.

The people who operate the gas analyser, have no experience whatsoever with
computers and the internet. Therefore, I would like to automate things as
much as possible, without the need for the user to enter information
concerning the internet connection.

In one of my earlier postings to this newsgroup I wanted to know how I can
check if the internet connection uses the LAN or a dial-up connection. This
is also one of the things I have to pass to the routine that sets up the
communication.

The idea was to check if a connection can be made on the LAN, and if not,
use the default dial-up connection of Internet Explorer/Outlook Express to
make the connection. For this purpose, I'm still looking for a way to
retrieve this information, so any thoughts on that are welcome as well.

I hope this gives you an idea of what I'm after.

Martin.
