You should be checking the return value of SHGetSpecialFolderLocation()
before calling SHGetPathFromIDList():

    LPITEMIDLIST pidl = NULL;
    if( SUCCEEDED(SHGetSpecialFolderLocation(0, CSIDL_SENDTO, &pidl)) )
    {
        char cBuf[MAX_PATH+1] = {0};
        SHGetPathFromIDList(pidl, cBuf);
        //...
        CoTaskMemFree(pidl);
    }
