How can I find to which COM-port a modem is connected?
The information is found from Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device
Manager/Modems/ModemXYZ/Properties, but how I do it from a program?

     Hello Jyrki ---

Well a 'quick and dirty' solution would be to
     poll the com ports, say COM1 - COM4 or COM1 - COM6
or whatever, till you find a functioning modem.

I know it's crude so it may or may not be sufficient
     for your app...

     HTH,

I currently try to open serial ports (COM1 - COM32) and show only the
ports that exist. I would also like to show the modem name after the
com-port in the selection list.

I could send command "AT" to every com port and see what is the
response, but that does not necessarily work since some modems do not
response if the serial speed is not correct. Some internal modems also
have more than one serial port, but only one of them can be used for
dialing.

I understand that there is a direct way to get get information about
installed devices and their properties.
