It was probably a mistake to post this to the Graphics group. My guess is that there must be an API handle to the MIDI device.. So, how can I simply talk to an internal MIDI device? Is there a Windows API connection to the onboard MIDI? Thanks, Nick

(For output it mostly involves calling midiOutShortMsg after opening and initializing the device) 2) MCI is a high level way to play MIDI files 3) Recent versions of DirectX have some support for MIDI input and output (via DirectMusic). I personally find DirectMucic confusing because you must learn a whole new terminology in addition to MIDI and figure out how that maps onto MIDI. Since DirectMusic has many features beyond MIDI, this is not simple. The Microsoft documentation for these APIs will probably leave you with questions, but it is a good place to start. When I was experimenting with them, I didn't know much about MIDI and which hurt my understanding of the little documentation there is. Chris Hill Chris244@aol.com

There are several components for talking to MIDI devices. The one I use is at: http://www.delphi32.com/members/1022/ It's very good and even works for USB MIDI ports -- Rgds Pete GenHelp: The Component Writers Help Authoring package ================================= Web: www.frasersoft.net "Chris Hill" <Chris244@aol.com> wrote in message news:3ebe68b4.73552983@forums.borland.com...
