Does windows (specifically Windows XP) use a registry key value to execute the following command from a program? ShellExecute(0,"open","http://finance.yahoo.com","","",SW_SHOWNORMAL); If yes, what is the name of this key? Danzer

Yes. It has to look up the program that is registered to handle the
HTTP protocol.

It is not a single key, but several keys working together. The Shell
recognizes that the specified filename begins with a URL protocol, so
it first opens the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<protocol> (in this case, <protocol> is "http")
It checks if the key has a "URL Protocol" value present. If present,
it then checks if the following key exists:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\<protocol>\shell\<verb> (in this case, <verb> is
"open")
If it does, then the Shell executes the program specified in the
"command" subkey, or connects to the server specified in the "ddeexec'
subkey.

Evidently the upgrade trashed the associations in the registry. I guess I will rebuild them from another machine that has SeaMonkey installed as the default browser unless you can suggest an easier way. Danzer
