How do I write a virtual COM port application?
I want to send messages to a legacy application which only can opens/reads
data via COM port.
I dont want to use a cable, I dont want to write a driver.
Any idea?

Too complicated, instead get a program that can read
data via a telnet client session and push data out
to a virtual COM session.

Such a program can be got here....

What you have to do now is have your data available
via a telnet server which can be found in the indy palette.

Cheers!

You have to write your own device driver for that. There is no other way
around that. So it is best to just get a third-party one that already does
what you need. I personally have been using "com0com"
(http://com0com.sourceforge.net) for awhile now and it works well.

I found there is a "remote morning tool" which can send data to every
application that read data from COM port.
The application is under the OpenAT software suite in this site.

It seems it only need a dll file to do that. How do they do it?

After I tested it, the operation seems like below:

Legacy AP <--read-- Port Message Queue <--- send --- "Remote Montoring
Tool"

In this case, Legacy AP opens COM1 which is a physical hardware port,
however, "Remote Montoring Tool" still can send message to COM1.
In the meanwhile, if you use another COM port application like Hyperterminal
to open COM1 again, error occurred. Becasue COM1 was occupied by Legacy AP.

Weird~
Is there existing COM port messages that can be posted to COM queue?

I suggest this as well, I use the hwgroup software very frequently. You
don't have to use telnet, either, you can change the settings so it just
passes what it receives over the network byte for byte to the "virtual"
port. All you do is run vsp, press the "create com port" button, then set
your legacy application to connect to the COM port it creates. Then
communicating with it is as easy as dropping a TTcpClient onto your form and
sending/receiving data through it.
