I should have said Outlook Express is running. This has an SMTP server, and 
it is my default one, so I would have thought that .NET would have sent to 
that. Even if not so, why did SmtpMail.Send(myMail); return an error, after 
all the argument was a valid Mailmessage object?

All very puzzling. Had thought I had escaped from the convoluted MAPI, but 
perhaps not
