overriding inputchar in textbox

I wish to override how a textbox responds to the downarrow. The help states 
that this key gets ignored by the onkeyup and onkeydown events unless I 
override the Inputchar of the textbox. How can I do this so that I can trap 
the down arrow in the onkeydown event?
