I saw a very interesting conference report (from 2004 I believe) which talked about a managed code database engine from Borland. Is that still ongoing development or has it been cut back? To be honest it looked quite interesting because it seems to me that developing database apps to run on shared third party hosting basically means you have to go the MS-SQL route. That is good for high performance, but if all you need is a simple low traffic BBS it seems overkill. I had a go at using Access, only to find my hosting company doesn't allow MS Access connections from ASP.NET pages. I know ASP.NET is more secure but sometimes the security makes it hard to get on with what you want to accomplish. Any progress with the Borland Managed Database? Steve.

It seems it was derailed for some time because a couple of key people responsible for it (and JDatastore, from which it sprang) had left the company. However, both of those people have come back (Allen Bauer talks about this in his blog http://blogs.borland.com/abauer/archive/2006/06/16/25352.aspx) so, while there's been no official announcement that I'm aware of, I expect to see it get completed and released - hopefully soon. -- Wayne Niddery - Winwright, Inc (www.winwright.ca) Working for yourself is great because you get to work half days, and you can choose any twelve hours you want.

Hi, I just wanted to run this past you because even with managed code, not all goes according to plan. Although I have a suspicion it probably is all going according to plan from the MS point of view because it is not easy even with managed code .DLL's to get things working. I did find a managed code database engine called VistaDB 3.0 I purchased the CTP version, and had a go with it. All works fine until it is uploaded to the shared hosting site. Once there, the complex security of .NET comes into play, and I hit problems with "partially trusted caller". After some research on the .NET I found I need to create a custom policy configuration file. Went through all that hassle, uploaded it all, and received the error that the web administrator has locked access to the securityPolicy tag using allowOverride=false. I guess this is a similar situation to web hosting companies in the ASP days not allowing people to register their own .COM objects. So, it doesn't work. The security of .NET can be quite a pain to work with. It will take me quite a while to get to grips with it. But, this scenario is something worth looking into if the NDataStore team want to deploy their engine in shared hosting scenarios. Steve.
