Thanks for your comments. Yes I am tending towards a third party add on;
a previous post here suggested "Diamond ADO" which does look interesting.

I have obediently upgraded my Delphi all the way through version 5, but when
versions 6 and 7 were announced I discarded upgrading because they did not
seem to offer anything that was of interest to me.

And V5Pro is still serving me well, at least if I can make it contact MS
ACCESS.
(And even that is not a big deal for me).
