Gelein, Thanks for previous help. I've installed #274 and connected to IB 7.5 Desktop and IB 2007 Developer on an XP workstation. Some feedback here on just the Backup features. Input fields are not entirely intuitive. So I view the help. I guess this is the help that came with #274, since I installed to it's own directory as suggested. I would like to see F1 on the Backup form display IBConsole Help, but that is inactive. The "?" displays help, although I would expect that to display focussed help on just the field requested. Anyway, the backup form displays my host and server in the sub-title bar. "Local Server - gds_db" or "Local Server - ib2007svr". The Database box contains only Alias, which is populated with the one database I have in each server. Good. The Help is different, showing two entries, Server and Alias, under Database, which is unlike the form. Now that I have entered the Server and Database I want to back up, there is still a lot more file information to enter - really too much: a Server, an Alias and Filenames (with pages). The Server pulldown is populated with my two IB Servers, fully qualified, as host - alias. I'm thinking my backup file is going to be a system file - Windows in this case (eg C:\Temp\mydb.gbk). Can I really backup to a different server than the one where my database is running? That is displayed above. OK, so I leave it alone as the same Server shown in the sub-title bar. Alias, we have so many Aliases in IB now, but the Help file doesn't help, it just says the information is stored with this alias. Is this a unique alias for this backup? An entry is required here. So I put the Database Alias entered above. OK Filename. This is the only entry I really expected to need in this entire "Backup Files" section. I entered one file as "C:\Temp\mydb" with no Size. I'm not sure "Pages" makes any sense here or how one would enter it. So, what were the results? After a bit of trial and error, I created a backup from the database in my IB7.5 server. I thought the application would add the gbk file suffix, but it doesn't, so I have a backup file with no suffix. But it created a file. The IB2007 server was not as successful. I believe it knew what it wanted to do, and it actually began. It created the empty file to start, but then failed. This is a different server (on this same desktop) and a different database, so errors may be elsewhere - in fact I believe they are. But I wanted to provide the feedback above regarding your backup form and the online help. Just a little additional information. This recent upgrade to IB2007 from IB7.5 has run off the road many times. But at this point I have it running, I have converted a large database, and that application works generally well. But that has a backup feature in the application that also failed with little information. So I have been trying the backup here. I hope you will be able to simplify your form. -- Patrick Moloney

Patrick, Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate that. I agree that the backup- and restore dialogs are quit complicated. These dialogs still have a lot of possibilities that where often used in the past with small disk sizes. I think today they are seldom used unless you have still to deal with disk space or your database is so large that it can't fit in a single file. I am already lookin for a way to simplify things without throwing everything away. There is also a question included in your comments. Yes, you can create the backupfile anywhere if you have sufficient rights although there are some restrictions. If you want to create a backupfile on a remote filesystem different from the InterBase server you better use a uncname. The server runs usually under the system account and don't have any knowledge of your drive mappings. -- Gelein van de Voorde (IBConsole team) "The blossoms on an apple tree are standardized, and yet they are all different.
