I have the same problem on RedHat 7.0 (upgrade from a 6.2 install) with all of the updates using up2date. I installed the Linux Interbase SuperServer v.6.01 RPM from http://www.borland.com/interbase/downloads/index.html /etc/hosts.equiv only has "localhost" in it. I also tried starting with localhost in /etc/gds_hosts.equiv to no avail. I still get the following after a pause of a few seconds: root@sherizod:/opt/interbase/bin :-O ./ibmgr -start -forever check $INTERBASE/interbase.log file for errors can not start server root@sherizod:/opt/interbase/bin :-O tail ../interbase.log sherizod (Server) Sun Nov 26 21:31:46 2000 SERVER/process_packet: connection rejected for root sherizod (Server) Sun Nov 26 21:31:46 2000 SERVER/process_packet: connection rejected for root sherizod (Server) Sun Nov 26 21:31:46 2000 SERVER/process_packet: connection rejected for root -- If there is nobody who would be glad to read your obituary, you're not doing anything worthwile.
