All right, fair enough. But what I am really interested to know is 
*what* IB is doing on the first connection. All subsequent connections 
to the database go relatively smooth, but the first connection can 
take as long as half an hour.

Is it performing a database sweep, garbage collecting? It is almost 
as if IB configures itself for access on the first connection. If 
I restart the server, the first connection again takes this long, 
but then not again until the server is restarted. What does IB do?
