My company faced lack of IB6 support for Novell, and on top of that we realized that UDFs won't behave nice on Novel. Therefore, we simply suggest to our customer a switch to Linux. The OS is free and hardware requirements aren't hight. Before making the move we researched the options and we came up with packaging a hardware system with our product. We helped the customers to make the right decision by: 1. indicating the bleak future of Novell (as we understand it) 2. diminishing support for Novel environment 3. licensing costs of Novell and NT 4. prepackaging and preconfiguring a Linux server for them (if needed) So far we only see great enthusiasm among both younger and more exerienced administrators. We even have a customer, currently running an NT network, very eager to get a Linux server on his network. So far, after about 8 months of tests plus 6 months in production the Linux/Interbase combination caused ZERO problems and everybody is happy. As a matter of fact I managed to squeeze in a cheap Linux box on our LAN as a developers' file server. Nobody noticed anything, except that things don't crash anymore. I really wouldn't shy away from Linux based on customers views. If they have any kind of expertise they will go right for it, if they lack this expertise then, I think, it is your job to tell them what they need to know, i.e. Linux (as a server platform) is DEFINITELY NOT "5 years from now before it can possibly be where Netware and NT are now" quality wise. "Numbers wise"? I don't get your point and frankly, with all respect, I don't care about those numbers. The numbers I care about are those preceded by the $ sign. Incidentally, our customers subscribe to the same point of view. I don't intend to lecture you on the benefits of Linux in general but as for the specific requirement (IB Server platform) it is ideal. If you care I can share some of my exerience Good luck Dariusz.
