Interbase and XP

I have been having some problems on my new XP Pro box. I have installed
interbase client and server (v6.0.2), but I keep losing both - ie I can't
connect to either my localhost server or a remote server using IB Console.

I get the error

Unable to complete network request to host "hostname".
Failed to locate host machine.
Undefined service gds_db/tcp

Having searched around I found an article in community

http://community.borland.com/article/0,1410,25290,00.html

which suggested that I check the services file. I did this, but the correct
entry was in there.

I then thought that it might be the xp restore stuff, as I could revert to a
previous restore point and all was fine. So, I thought, I'll turn off the
system restore function. But I've lost it again! and of course as I have
turned off System Restore it has deleted all my previous restore points (why
can't they let you do this manually!).

Anyway, has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks
Russell

Check and make sure that you have one and only one version of gds.dll
on the search path of your machine. Check also that it matches the
version of the server(s) to which you are trying to connect. Have you
tried to diagnose the connection with IBConsole?

Uninstall, not forgetting to manually delete registry keys for both
Interbase and IBConsole. Check to see that gds32.dll has gone from the
machine completely - do a full search. Reboot, double check to see
that everything has really and truly been removed from the machine.
Reboot. Reinstall Interbase using the defaults for *_everything_*.

Get latest IBConsole from codecentral and run that.

That's about all I can think of at the moment. I have to warn you
though, I did come across a similar problem at an IB install that I
did once. Just couldn't get one client machine (the boss's) to connect
using IBConsole. Eventually had to tell him that for security reasons
he had to do any IBConsole stuff at the server itself.

XP Pro, SP 2,

Oracle, 9.2.0.1.0 (Enterprise Ed.)
Interbase 6.0.1.0;

When asking database related questions, please give other posters
some clues, like operating system, version of db being used and DDL.
The exact text and/or number of error messages is useful (!= "it didn't work!").
Thanks.

Furthermore, as a courtesy to those who spend
time analysing and attempting to help, please

Problem solved !

Registry key type changed from REG_EXPAND_SZ to REG_SZ

Key in question

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\D
ataBasePath

in regedit

rename the old DataBasePath key DataBasePath_old and create a new key
"Expandable String Value"
and name it DataBasePath. Copy value from old key.

close regedit

Reboot computer

Thanks Paul.

tried this, no joy - but Bill's response did the trick.

btw, liked the "security reason", I've made a note for later use :-)
