You can still download the open source version of IB from
http://mers.com but why would you want to? Development was stopped
years ago and it has problems with the latest versions of Windows (XP,
2003). Find a database that is still being developed and you will have
fewer problems.

Where did you get the idea that IB 6 is the only open source database
in the world? :) At this point the problems that IB 6 has with XP and
2003 are annoying but not critical. You have to disably hyperthreading
in the system BIOS if you have a hyperthreaded processor because IB 6
is actually slower under hyperthreading. Access to isc4.gdb is slower
on XP because system restore backs up any file with a .gdb extension
every time it is changed. The first connection to Win2003 is very slow
due to a change that Microsoft made in the TCP/IP stack. The problems
can only get worse as new versions of Windows are released. If you want
open source to reduce costs that is fine but I cannot see how you or
your users benefit from using an open source database that is not being
developed when there are other options.

The last time I checked all other versions of IB had to be paid for and if
the budget is tight, open source sounds like the answer. How expensive is a
database that is still being developed? I think budget plays a big role in
the choice as to which db. The last time I worked with open source was with
Win 2000 & 2000 server. Worked great then. Is it so bad now with XP?
Actually, I know a few systems that still works great with IB 5.5 and Win XP
+ Win 2000 server. In 5 years not 1 of those db's ever fell over. I really
like IB and can vouch for a stable db. Didn't know open source was so bad.

Hi Abraham,

It's not quite true that development of the open-source Interbase stopped years ago. Borland has stopped development of it, but an active open-source community (including one of the original IB developers) has continued work on it. The project is now called Firebird (presumably because Interbase is a trademark owned by Borland). They have made many improvements since the IB 6.0 codebase was released. Check it out here:

Regards,
Luke.
