getting DATE fields from pdox7 table?

Hi, I'm having a problem getting the WHERE clause in my SELECT statement
to filter out rows when a DATE/TIME field is used in that WHERE clause.

Example:
SELECT * FROM signups WHERE "start_time" IS NULL AND "start_date" IS NULL

will get me every row in signups, irrespective of whether or not
start_time or start_date are null. Is there something wrong in my query?
I'm not really sure how SQL deals with date/time datatypes.
I've also tried
WHERE "start_time" LIKE '' and
WHERE "start_time" = 0, both with limited success. =)

Please respond if you have any comments,

Jeff
