how do I draw a JPG to a panel/container

I thought I could just use a drawImage() method, but I can't seem to get it
to work.  I can get it to work if I use an Icon and a JLabel, but I was
hoping to avoid using a JLabel for an image.

Can I draw an image to a container?  Thanks.
