Transparent bitmaps overlapped at runtime

Hello,
I'm using JBuilder 4 pro with Personal Java 3.1 JDK (1.1.8 compliant) for an
embedded application.

Asynchronuosly, I need to create various bitmaps, and, at paint time, to
draw them one over one, using transparency.
The final image is a multiple-bar graph with overlapped trend graphics. Each
graph is associated to different field parameters and data.
When a graph need to be modified (new data arrives), I can draw the whole
image simply using the other bitmaps and the new graph, without recreate all
the bitmaps.

I don't know how to create an offscreen - transparent bitmap with JDK 1.1.8
(with Java 2 is easy).
Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance, bye.
