It works, but it doesn't look as good.  There's a perceptible difference
in the spacing of some letter combinations.  I made a couple of changes
to make the spacing uniform, regardless of the pitch:

 public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
  // Define font used to draw text.
  Font f = new Font("SansSerif", Font.PLAIN, 12);
  g.setFont(f);

  // Calculate baseline origin so text is centered vertically.
  FontMetrics fm = g.getFontMetrics(f);
  int originY = getHeight()/2 + fm.getHeight()/2 - fm.getDescent();

  // Print text with padding between each character.
  char [] textChars = this.text.toCharArray();
  int originX = 0;
  for (int i = 0; i < this.text.length(); i++) {
   g.drawChars(textChars, i, 1, originX, originY);
   originX += fm.charWidth(textChars[i])+ this.offset;
  }
 }

This code has the added benefit of not offsetting the first character.

The program I needed this for needs a fixed pitch, but I'm glad you
raised the question, because I like the revised code better.  I'm new to
Java and really appreciate the feedback.
