Wow, the JDK goes at the end??? If the bum library happens to be a third party product, as it is in my case, you're hosed. So there's no way to say that the JDK gets searched first??? In my case it's LiveConnect which is a Netscape library. I have no problem with this when building in Cafe. It seems that, if anything, it should be configurable as to whether you want the standard API searched first. If I use Java from the command line I don't have to put the standard API in my classpath but it will be searched before the CLASSPATH entries are. In fact, that's the whole crux of the class loader architecture in Java 2 - bootstrap class loader for standard API, user defined for standard extensions, user defined for classpath then any user defined you would create. I can't believe there isn't a way to indicate that the standard JDK API should always be searched for classes first. I can't comprehend how you could possibly want it any other way. I'll do a little more digging but if that's the case, I guess my evaluation is going to be short and sweet - off to VisualAge! Thanks for your response.
