You can try getting the Applet's AppletContext and using its showDocument
method.

import java.applet.*;
import java.net.*;

class TestingApp extends Applet {
  AppletContext ac = this.getAppletContext();
// create an instance of URL class with the URL of the HTML you want to show
// and create a string indicating where you'd like to show the HTML
// which can be _self, _blank, _top, _parent or a named window.
  ac.showDocument(url,string);
}
