See System.getProperty(key) in the javadoc. Some environment information
is made available to applications, including java.home, user.home, etc.
On unix, the Jbuilder4 startup script supports copying selected
environment variables into the JVM's system properties with the copyenv
function of the shell script. Thus, something like TEMP could become
available through System.getProperty("borland.copyenv.TEMP"), as I read it.
Look around in your scripts/config files and see if there isn't something
similar.
You could certainly do this sort of thing yourself, it would only require
you to write a wrapper around your java invocation to create the -D parameters
required.

that kicks a monopoly in the pants has got to be good for something.
