JDK 1.2 problem with Interclient.

In JDK 1.2 on the line:
Class.forName ("interbase.interclient.Driver");
gives me the error:
java.lang.ClassFormatError /interbase/interclient/Driver
    (global variable name has bad constant pool index)

Why? and what is wrong? How come in JDK 1.1.6 and 1.1.7 this line works.
