JLayeredPane works?

I have a JApplet, and this works just fine:

   getContentPane ().add (new JButton ("Hello"));

Except this does not work at all:

   getLayeredPane ().add (new JButton ("Hello"),
                          JLayeredPane.DEFAULT_LAYER);

What is wrong with the layered pane that it does not show things you
place in it? I also tried adding a JInternalFrame object, and that does
not show up either.
