setVisible(true) what am i doing wrong?

when i use the following statement blank out an image and display another
image,
the image1.setVisible(false); works but the image2.setVisible(true);
does not.  the only way i know how to get image2 to display is to
setSize(); after i setVisible to true;

i'm converting from 1.0 jdk to 1.1... ITS KILLING ME...



does not work...

  void image1_mouseEntered(MouseEvent e) {
   image1.setVisible(false);
   image2.setVisible(true);
  }


does work...

  void image1_mouseEntered(MouseEvent e) {
   image1.setVisible(false);
   image2.setVisible(true);
   this.setSize(1,100);
  }
