Most recent files list

Using C++ Builder I created a "most recent files" list and stored this list
in the system registry. I'd like to have a similar file list in a JBuilder
application I'm writing but for portability of course the registry can't be
used. What's the "standard" for doing this kind of thing in Java. Should I
just create an application specific data file and store the information
there?
